Background

Biographical / Historical:

George Carson Bales was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, on 6 April 1920. He studied fine and applied arts at the University of Illinois and graduated with honors in 1941. He then joined the United States Air Force and served in World War II and the Korean War. Bales later worked with Walt Disney Studios as an artist, illustrating Song of the South, Pecos Bill, Little Toot and The Wind in the Willows. He went on to earn his master's in Business Administration at Pepperdine University and his Ph.D. in Business Administration at UCLA; he later became a senior vice president at Pepperdine University. A family friend of famed Indiana Hoosier and war correspondent Ernie Pyle, Bales wrote Ernie Pyle: A Hoosier Childhood (2002). Bales died in Birmingham, Alabama, on 13 December 2016.

Scope and Content:

This collection is mostly focused on materials related to Ernie Pyle's life. It contains newspapers and magazines featuring Ernie Pyle; original copies, xerox copies and telegrams of Pyle's correspondence; publishers' correspondence related to the Pyle biography; Ernie Pyle's original journalist ID card; Pyle's will and estate distribution papers; Bales' writing on Pyle; original art by Bales; photographs of Pyle's and Bales' families; Pyle's transcript; political cartoons; commemorative materials related to Pyle's death; newspapers; and a draft of Ernie Pyle: A Hoosier Childhood.
