Background

Biographical / Historical:

Peter Bush, British translator and scholar, attended Cambridge University to study Spanish and French and went on to Oxford University for his PhD in Spanish history and fiction. He later became a professor and lecturer at Middlesex University until 1998, when he became both a professor of literary translation and Director of the British Centre for Literary Translation (BCLT). He is a noted translator of literary works in Catalan, Spanish, French and Portugese.

Some of his noted translations include: the works of Juan Goytisolo, The Havana Quartet by Cuban writer Leonardo Padura, The Military Transition by Narcís Serra, works of Catalan writers Quim Monzó, Teresa Solana, and Josep Pla, Queen Cocaine by Nuria Amat. He also edited two anthologies, the voice of the turtle: an anthology of Cuban stories, and Spain an anthology part of the Traveler's Literary Companion series.

Bush has earned awards and accolades for his translations and other works, including the Outstanding Translation Award from the American Literary Translators Association in 1994, the Premio Valle-Inclán in 1997 and 2012, the Premi Ramon Llull for Literary Translation from Catalan in 2014, and the La Creu de Sant Jordi by the Generalitat of Catalonia in 2015.

Correspondence includes letters from Nuria Amat, Leonardo Padura, correspondence related to the voice of the turtle, and Carol Maier. Publicity includes various articles and reviews related to Bush's translations. Translations includes copies of edited and final drafts and proofs of many of Bush's translations. Professional files includes translation theory notes and materials and files related to Translation conferences.
