Background

Biographical / Historical:

Douglas Unger, 1952- , is an American novelist. He was born in Moscow, Idaho on June 27, 1952. He has thus far written four novels, one of which, Leaving the Land (his 1984 debut) was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. He has also published a short fiction collection, Looking for War and Other Stories. After teaching for eight years at Syracuse University, Unger became a creative writing professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he co-founded the Creative Writing International program. In addition to his teaching and writing, Unger is involved with several arts organizations, including "Words Without Borders," which promotes international contemporary literature.

A close friend of writer Raymond Carver, Unger has collected various publications and decades of correspondence between the two families.

Scope and Content:

Correspondence contains the various letters between the Unger family and Raymond, Christine, and Vance Carver between 1968 and 2003. Interviews includes those of Unger and Maryann Carver about Raymond Carver. "Talk About Love" includes various documents surrounding the screen treatment of the Raymond Carver story. Writings includes short stories, poetry, and chapbooks of Raymond and Maryann Carver. What It Used to Be Like includes materials relating to Maryann Carver's book about her life with Raymond Carver. Miscellaneous includes other materials including advertisements for public readings of Carver's works, literary award shows invitations, newspaper clippings/reviews, etc. Serials includes magazines and journals containing published Raymond Carver stories.
