Background

Biographical / Historical:

In 1813, brothers Joel (1772-1823), Nathaniel (1783-1818), and Abner Scribner (1789-1827) left their home in New England and traveled west, eventually purchasing land in Indiana Territory and naming it New Albany, after Albany, New York. The brothers played a crucial role in building up the structure of the city and establishing various businesses. Abner Scribner's son, Benjamin Franklin Scribner (1825-1900), was a partner in the New Albany pharmaceutical firm Scribner and Maginness before serving as a brigadier general for the United States Army during the Civil War.

Scope and Content:

This collection records how the Scribner family settled and developed the city of New Albany, Indiana. Correspondence includes letters the Scribner family exchanged with friends, colleagues, and relatives on both personal and official matters. Photographs gathers photos and tintypes of the Scribner family members, mainly of the generations of Abner Scribner and his children. Related Families contains documents, letters, and photographs of other families related to the Scribner family, mainly though marriage. Printed Materials includes books, magazines, and periodicals about New Albany; many of these provide social, political, and geographical records of New Albany in the time of Abner Scribner. Personal gathers diaries and other private records of the family history. Writings encompasses speeches and articles by Scribner family members. Miscellaneous includes items such as pamphlets the family collected that do not fit in other series.
