Background

Biographical / Historical:

Breon Mitchell, 1942- , is an Indiana University professor of Germanic Studies, a translator of German to English, and a Samuel Beckett bibliographer. He began his professional career with a Ph.D. from Oxford University in Comparative Literature, and joined the Indiana University faculty in 1968, in both the Germanic Studies and Comparative Literature departments.

During his time at IU, Mitchell co-founded the Friends of the Lilly Library, served as a chair of the Lilly advisory committee and eventually became the acting Lilly Library director from 2001-2012.

Mitchell has also been an avid scholar of literary translation and a notable translator. With his colleague Philip Kimball he established a bilingual literary magazine in German and English while still an undergraauate at the University of Kansas. His works include translations of The Tin Drum, by Günter Grass, The Trial by Franz Kafka, The God of Impertinence by Sten Nadolny, Shadowlife by Martin Grzimek, The Silent Angel by Heinrich Böll, Laura's Skin by J.F. Federspiel, and The Color of the Snow by Rüdiger Kremer.

Scope and Content:

Correspondence includes communications with other translators, authors and publishers as well as other colleagues. Professional Files includes author/title files, subject files, pulications, and writings. Translations include edited drafts and final manuscripts of Mitchell's major translations, including Tin Drum, The Trial, Laura's Skin, The Silent Anger, and Spies. Miscellaneous files include some edits of translation, miscellaneous personal and professional files, and correspondence.
