Biographical / Historical:

Stephen Kessler (b. 1947) is a poet, translator, essayist, and editor. He is the author of eight books and chapbooks of original poetry and fourteen books of literary translation. His translations of Luis Cernuda have won several prizes, including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and a Lambda Literary Award for Written in Water: The Prose Poems of Luis Cernuda, the Harold Morton Landon Translation Award (2010) for Desolation of the Chimera: Last Poems, and the PEN Center USA Translation Awards (2016) for Forbidden Pleasures: New Selected Poems, 1924-1949. He has also translated works by Pablo Neruda, Vicente Aleixandre, Julio Cortázar, Mahmoud Darwish, Raymond Queneau, and Ernesto Cardenal. Since 1999, Kessler has served as the editor of The Redwood Coast Review.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of correspondence from Stephen Kessler to poet Doreen Stock and author Barry Fruchter, arranged chronologically.

In the Doreen Stock series, letters are interspersed with drafts of poems, newspaper clippings, and issues of the Redwood Coast Review that Kessler sent to her.
