Background

Biographical / Historical:

In October 1626, tailor John Brangston hosted a dinner party attended by Henry and Dorothy Manners as well as Thomas Brediman, a soldier. According to the Manners, Brediman claimed that "the king was too much ruled by the Duke" and mused over the possibility of harm coming to the King and the Duke of Buckingham. Brediman was sent to the Gatehouse in early November for his treasonous speech, where he spent over a year incarcerated. He confessed after 100 days' imprisonment, though he claimed drunkenness rather than sincerity to be the cause of his slander.

For more information, see David Cressy's Dangerous Talk: Scandalous, Seditious, and Treasonable Speech in Pre-Modern England, p. 163-165.

The documents relate to accusations against Thomas Brediman for slanderous speech and high treason and date from Oct.31-Nov. 2, 1626.
