Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Carrol Franklin Oates, 1930- , is a literary critic, translator, and professor of French, Comparative Literature, and Linguistics at Binghamton University—SUNY. His translation work focuses on bringing Haitian literature into the English canon. Jacques Stephen Alexis, 1922-1961, was a Haitian novelist, poet, and activist. Alexis also founded La Ruche, a group dedicated to literary and social issues in Haiti; he also attended medical school in Paris.

The collection consists of correspondence, drafts, corrected proofs and publication related files for the English translation L'espace d'un cillement by Jacques Stéphen Alexis. The translation was made by Carrol F. Coates with the assistance of Edwidge Danticat and published as In the Flicker of an Eyelid by the University of Virginia Press in 2002.
