Background

Biographical / Historical:

Born in 1935 in Indianapolis, Indiana, Clayton Eshleman switched his career path from music to poetry while a student at Indiana University. His interest in poetry in translation led him to learn Spanish and begin Spanish-to-English translation work, starting with Pablo Neruda's Residencias. Since retiring from his position as a full professor of English at Eastern Michigan University, Eshleman continues to travel extensively and further his research into Paleolithic painted caves.

Scope and Content:

The collection consists of correspondence, typescripts, and page proofs between Eshleman and publisher/bookseller Matthew Jennett of Pharos Books.
