Background
- Biographical / Historical:
The mission of Haymarket Books, a non-profit publishing house founded in 2001, is to "publish books that contribute to struggles for social and economic justice." The publisher derives its name from the Haymarket Martyrs whose 1886 labor demonstrations fought for the eight-hour workday and led to the creation of May Day. Haymarket Books' three founders – Anthony Arnove, Ahmed Shawki and Julie Fain – all worked on the International Socialist Review, a publication of the Center for Economic Research and Social Change, before founding the publishing house.
- Scope and Content:
The collection consists of copies of the imprints produced by Haymarket Books, including translations. Also included are 27 issues of the International Socialist Review, a publication with which the three founders of Haymarket Books were involved.
