Background

Biographical / Historical:

Doris Elizabeth "Betty" Maxey, 1928-2004, was born in Chicago, Illinois to John Thomas Jones and Edith Lotte Avery Jones. After graduating from the American Academy of Art in 1946, Maxey worked for Whitaker Guernsey Studios in Chicago and married illustrator Dale Maxey in the early 1950's. From 1961-1976, Maxey was based in London with Artist Partners, then returned to Chicago to work for the Handelan & Petersen Studio. Throughout this time, she worked for a number of magazines, including Women's Realm and Reader's Digest. Maxey is best known for illustrating Enid Blyton's Famous Five series of books from 1967-1991, as well as many Noel Streatfeild books. She also painted for the US Air Force Art Program and the NASA Art Program. Maxey and her husband had two Siamese cats to whom they were very devoted.

The collection consists of illustrations, mock-ups, and subject files of illustrator Betty Maxey.
