Background

Biographical / Historical:

Samuel N. Rosenberg (1936-2020) was professor emeritus of French and Italian at Indiana University, a department he joined in 1962 and chaired from 1977 to 1984, and retired from Indiana University in 2000. Rosenberg received an A.B. summa cum laude from Columbia University in 1957 and received a Ph.D. in Romance Philology from Johns Hopkins University in 1965. Rosenberg's publications include books and articles on Old and Middle French as well as Hebrew lyric poetry. Notable works include Chansons de trouvères (1995), Old French Ballette (2006), and Sottes chansons contre Amours : parodie et burlesque au Moyen Âge (2010). Rosenberg continued to publish new books and articles after retirement. Rosenberg received the National Endowment for the Humanities Research Grant (1989-1992). He was also a bibliographer and editor for the Encomia: Bibliographical Bulletin of the International Courtly Literature Society from 1981 to 2010. He was a Woodrow Wilson Foundation fellow from 1959-1960, Fulbright fellow from 1960-1961, and Lilly Faculty fellow from 1986-1987.

Scope and Content:

The collection consists of multiple drafts and research materials for Sottes chansons contre Amours : parodie et burlesque au Moyen Âge (2010) and Old French Ballette (2006) as well as a small collection of letters, postcards, and handwritten notes. Drafts include notes from Rosenberg's editor as well as handwritten notes. Also included are prints of Rosenberg and fellow professor and French medievalist Marie-Geneviève Grossel who teaches medieval language and latin at the Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France.
