Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Sidney Edgerton Whitman, 1898-1982, was an author of Westerns (published under the name S. E. Whitman) as well as The Troopers: an informal history of the Plains Cavalry, 1865-1890. His father in the military, Whitman grew up in one of the few remaining cavalary posts in the Western united states. He would go on to serve in World War I as an infantry private and as a platoon sergeant in World War II before he began his career of writing western novels. Whitman was married to to Eunice M. Whitman, 1919-2012, who worked as a librarian in Norfolk, MA.
- Scope and Content:
The collection consists of scrapbooks, drafts, correspondence, typescripts, printed books and translations, and one photograph relating to the works of Sidney Edgerton Whitman. The bulk of the collection is divided between unpublished manuscripts, short stories, research and notes, and ephemera. Over 700 pages of research notes are related to Whitman's work on just one manuscript.
