Background

Biographical / Historical:

Greg Gatenby (b. 1950), Canadian poet and author, served as the Artistic Director of the International Festival of Authors Harbourfront - a yearly program dedicated to bringing together notable authors from across the globe - in Toronto, Ontario, Canada from its foundation in 1975 until 2003. Gatenby received his Bachelor of Arts in English from Glendon College at York University in 1972. In 1983 he published Whales: A Celebration -an anthology of literary, musical, and artistic works about whales and dolphins.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of the papers of Greg Gatenby, b. 1950. Gatenby served as Artistic Director of the International Festival of Authors Harbourfront – a yearly program dedicated to bringing together notable authors from across the globe - in Toronto, Ontario, Canada for 28 years. The correspondence in this collection includes coordination of translations of literature for Whales: A Celebration, with translators Agnes Stein, Michael Butler, Michael Hamburger, Josef Škvorecky, and Michael Hulse. A large portion of the collection is dedicated to personal letters and emails spanning the course of several decades with Gatenby's close friend Michael Hulse - poet, translator, and critic - which grew out of the correspondence between Gatenby and Hulse for the anthology.

Acquisition information:
Purchase: 2010
Arrangement:

Single series of Correspondence, filed by recipient. Order appears to largely have been established before this author's arrangement of the collection. Minimal rearrangement localized to Hulse files - this section of papers appeared to have been in chronological order, then dropped (?) and order flipped with c.1996-2006 on top, unordered in middle and 1978-c.1996. Middle section of Hulse correspondence completely out of order, so chronological order restablished to best of ability. Several undated christmas cards were in this middle section and have been seperated into their own folder.
