Biographical / Historical:

Jerry Thomas Boyd was born on March 22, 1946 to Madelyn Wagner Boyd and Warren (Buck) Boyd in Gary, IN. He remained in Indiana through his college education at Indiana University Bloomington. He was a dedicated artist, cartoonist, and writer who published two novels: "Shift Happens: A Novel of Awakenings" and "Marooned on Margo." He authored several other essays and numerous journal entries featured in the collection. He lived in several different places across the country, including Boston (1970s), Washington D.C. (1979-1992), and San Francisco (1992-1995). He finished his life in Valparaiso, IN working at the library at the Valparaiso School of Law. It was there that he actively pursued LGBTQ+ activism. Although he passed away from acute myelogenous leukemia on May 18, 2019, he was survived by his husband, Dennis Kniat, brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Betty Gowing Boyd, and his two nephews, Tommy and David Boyd.

Scope and Content:

The series "Early Life and Education" includes information regarding Jerry's education, kindergarten through college. The "Biographical Information" Series is broken into two sub-series: "Jerry's Biographical Information" and "Genealogy." The Genealogy subseries includes materials related to Warren Ransburg, Boyd's paternal great-grandfather, and Herman Wagner, his maternal grandfather. The next series is labelled "Art." This series is also broken into sub-series. The first sub-series is "Magazines and Collage" which contains magazine cutouts and pages as well as the collages that those pages were used to cut out. The second sub-series is "Cartoons and Drawings" which contains his cartoons and drawings. The next sub-series is "Jerry Creates XXX" which contains sexually explicit drawings of Jerry's creation. The final sub-series is "Art Photography" which includes photographs with an artistic, rather than documentary purpose in mind. The next series is "Writing." "Marooned on Margo" is the first sub-series, and these folders contain any and all material relating to Boyd's publication, Marooned on Margo." The second sub-series is "Shift Happens" which features all materials in reference to Boyd's publication of "Shift Happens: A Novel of Awakenings." The next sub-series is "Stranger and Stranger" which contains writings and drawings in reference to Boyd's project of the same name. The next sub-series is "Journals and Commonplace Books" which contains journals and commonplace books as well as journalistic musings on loose-leaf. The final sub-series is "Essays and Creative Writing" which contains any and all creative writing not including personal journalistic writing. The next series is "LGBT Advocacy" which contains information and documents regarding Boyd's activism at Valparaiso University. The next series is "Romantic Life" which contains information regarding past partners of Boyd as well as his husband. The next series is "Photos" which contains photos from throughout Jerry's life. He is the subject of many of the photos. The next series is "Correspondence" which contains any and all correspondence that is not kept in other files. The next series is "Travel" which contains information and miscellany from his travels. The next series is "Outside Publications" which contains any outside publications (not including the magazines and collage materials from the earlier sub-series). The final series is "Miscellany" which includes any and all miscellaneous information that does not seem to fit anywhere else. There are four additional oversized boxes containing oversized art and miscellaneous items. There are also two oversized folders not housed with the collection.
