Background
- Biographical / Historical:
David DeBoor Canfield is a composer, collector of records, and owner of Ars Antiqua, the "world's largest online classical vinyl record store." He began collecting records around age five with a gift from his father, professional musician and music educator John Canfield. From graduate school onward, his collecting parameters were to purchase "any record that contained a piece of music [he] had never heard before," a pursuit that led to his publication "Canfield Guide to Classical Recordings" as well as the founding of his record store, Ars Antiqua. After completing his doctorate in music composition at Indiana University, Canfield left his position as a supervisor at the music library to run Ars Antiqua full time. Canfield has composed around 200 pieces, winning first place in the Jill Sackler Composition Contest and the Dean's Prize at Indiana University. Most of his 200,000-250,000 record collection was sold to Library of Congress, with the exception of his collection of records pertaining to cats, which he gifted to the Lilly Library.
For more information on Canfield, see the Ars Antiqua website and Canfield's personal website.
