Background
- Biographical / Historical:
The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics was established in 1918 with a graduate-level dietetic internship program hosted by Indiana University School of Medicine. The mission of the department is to provide advanced education and supervised practice opportunities for future leaders in the application and advancement of nutrition and dietetics for the state of Indiana and beyond. The interns worked at various Indiana University Medical Centers including James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children (now Riley Hospital for Children) and Indiana University Medical Center. The internship program boasted the pediatric dietetic experience interns could receive at Riley Hospital for Children. In the mid-1990s, the department realigned with the School of Health and Human Sciences. The department has expanded now including an undergraduate certificate in nutrition, a master's degree in nutrition and dietetics, and Doctorate and Post-professional Doctorate in nutrition and dietetics.

This collection consists of the records from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Indiana University Purdue University- Indianapolis. The collection covers the years 1920-2000. Although there are gaps, the records provided provide an overview of the development and history of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics. The files are generally arranged in chronological order unless stated otherwise. This collection contains the following: certifications of the internship program from the American Dietetics Association, staff directories, materials from the realignment of the department from the School of Medicine to the School of Health and Human Sciences, event materials, photographs of intern classes, and newspaper clippings.
