Background

Biographical / Historical:

Robert Kya-Hill was born Robert Hill in Whitaker, North Carolina, on December 4, 1930. As a young actor, he went by his given name or as Bob Hill. Upon joining the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), he changed his name first to Robert Hill II and then to Robert Kya-Hill due to a SAG rule prohibiting two actors from using the same name. Kya is an East Indian prefix meaning "God Bless You."

In 1962, Kya-Hill, then known as Bob Hill, received the Best Actor Award from the National Evangelical Film Foundation for his performance in the film Dark Valley. Kya-Hill has worked steadily as a stage and screen actor, director, musician and educator.

Scope and Content:

The collection includes personal correspondence, photographs, a DVD of the 1961 film Dark Valley, resumes, and material, including a script, press kit, poster, and soundtrack album, for the film Slaves.

The collection was donated by Robert and Sally Kya-Hill in September 2009.
