Abstract:
The Ihlenfeld Collection includes the writings, correspondence, and lecture notes of Dr. Charles L. Ihlenfeld as well as materials on the work of Dr. Harry Benjamin and Dr. Ihlenfeld's research, clippings files, and audio cassettes of interviews and radio appearances. The materials were collected between the late 1960's and the mid-1990's.

Background

Biographical / Historical:

Charles L. Ihlenfeld (1937- ) worked with Dr. Harry Benjamin, the endocrinologist and expert on transsexuality in the late 1960s and early 1970s. A graduate of New York University School of Medicine, Ihlenfeld was working as an internist when Dr. Benjamin asked him to help with some of his patients in the late 1960s. Ihlenfeld and Benjamin worked together up to Benjamin's retirement in 1974 and wrote a number of published articles on transsexuality during that time. Ihlenfeld continued treating transsexuals for another year before retiring from his practice to pursue a residency in psychiatry. He has remained actively involved in the field of sexology and with transsexual and transgender issues and continued to maintain a close relationship with Dr. Benjamin up to Dr. Benjamin's death in 1986.

Scope and Content:

The Ihlenfeld Collection consists of one box containing 43 folders and 7 cassettes divided into 3 series:

  1. Research Files containing the lecture notes, drafts, and related correspondence of Dr. Ihlenfeld as well as reprints, brochures, audio cassettes, and magazine/newspaper clippings of materials authored by Dr. Ihlenfeld or relevant to a variety of transsexual and gender identity topics and support organizations
  2. Harry Benjamin Materials which contains materials relevant to the work and accomplishments of Dr. Harry Benjamin in the field of transsexualism and endocrinology
  3. Audio Materials which contains audiocassettes of speeches and radio appearances. The Kinsey Library holdings include a number of articles and book chapters written by Dr. Ihlenfeld and Dr. Benjamin.
