Background
- Biographical / Historical:
The Indiana Department of Bayh's office evolved from two of his original staff members, Bob Boxell working largely on Indiana political matters, and Larry Cummings (LC), who by 1965 was the designated head of the Indiana Department. It grew to contain around a dozen people in the "Indiana room" of the DC office and had its own administrative and secretarial staff. Where known, file labels reflect the staff member who created them. Staff members who contributed to the Indiana work were, in roughly chronological order:
- Clark F. Norton (CFN)
- Larry A. Conrad (LAC)
- Darry Sragow (DS)
- Gregg McManus (GM)
- Jim Maloney (JM)
- Jim Muldoon (JMu)
- Geoff Grodner (GG)
- David Bochnowski (DB)
- Jerry Udell (JU)
- Howard Paster (HP)
- Louis Mahern (LM)
- Mike Helfer (MH)
- Tom Connaughton (TC)
- Joe Rees (JR)
- Lew Borman (LB)
- Jay Townsend (JT)
- Nels Ackerson (NA)
- Scope and Content:
The Indiana Working Files include the files of staff members specifically assigned to Indiana matters as well as files of legislative staff members working on Indiana projects. There is thus overlap between the Indiana Working Files and the Legislative Working Files groups. Indiana staff members were often also part of the political team during the build-ups to campaigns, although files that are clearly political have been included in the separate Political Files group.

- Acquisition information:
- Gift 1981.
- Processing information:
Processed by Lindsay Kenderes, Nathaniel Pockras, and Kate Cruikshank.
Completed in 2013. Partial funding for processing was provided by a grant from the National Historic Publications and Records Commission of the National Archives (2010-2012).
- Arrangement:
Staff members maintained their own filing systems, thus files on the same topic might be unrecognizable as such to others. The Indiana Working Files have therefore been grouped according to archivist-assigned topic areas in order to bring those files together while still retaining their original labels with some minor modifications and additions for clarity. Within topics, the folders are in alphabetical order, then chronological. Documents within the folders are in chronological order.
Letter-size documents and legal-size and other oversize documents are stored in separate containers. The folder list groups all folders on a given topic together regardless of size, with indications to the left of the relevant box number. Folders with no box number are in the box last indicated above them.
