Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Bayh was assigned to the Committee on Appropriations in August 1972 and served until his departure from the Senate in 1980. His subcommittee assignments were District of Columbia (1972-1974, chair 1973-1974); Agriculture (1972-1980); Housing and Urban Development (1972-1980); Legislative (1972-1974); Treasury (1972-1975); Labor and Health, Education and Welfare (1975-1980); Transportation (chair, 1975-1980); and Interior (1977-1980).
- Scope and Content:
Materials consist of staff working files, reference materials, correspondence, and a substantial number of staff memos. Memos of Mary Jane Checchi in particular illuminate the issues and progress of legislation.

- Arrangement:
Files are arranged into two subseries: Appropriations - General, consisting of Administrative files and files related to the committee as a whole, arranged alphabetically; and Subcommittee and Topical Files, arranged alphabetically and within that chronologically.
Letter-size documents and legal-size and other oversize documents are stored in separate containers. The folder list groups all folders on a given topic together regardless of size, with indications to the left of the relevant box number. Folders with no box number are in the box last indicated above them.
