Abstract:
The Svend Holsoe Collection: Vai Materials contains information about the Vai, both the ethnic group and language of Liberia and South-Eastern Sierra Leone. Included is Holsoe's dissertation, research, photocopied 19th century documents on the region, people, and language, as well as reference materials and writing samples of the unique Vai script.

Scope and Content:

Svend Holsoe Collection: Vai Materials is divided into six series. The Holsoe's Papers and Publications series contains his dissertation as well as papers on Moano Sando and Zolu Duma. The Papers and Reports series includes many photocopied papers from 19th century sources as well as papers about Theodore Canot, and Sierra Leone. Dictionaries, definitions, and other like material can be found in the Reference series. The Research series contains gathered materials on Cape Mount and Bopolu, as well as Gallinas letters. Many of these are also photocopied from 19th century sources. Subject Files contain miscellaneous materials such as notebooks, lecture notes, and other vai projects. The Writing Samples series has samples of the vai script, translations, and other handwritten works in vai.
