- The Peebles, C.S. Papers, 1963-2012, work included in this collection covers topics in pre-Columbian morturary practices, geophysical application in archaeology, information technology, and others. Records in this collection consists of his teaching materials; data from archaeological research including field notes, artifact drawings, photographs, burial records, and excavation maps, primarily from the pre-Columbian sites of Moundville and Lubbub Creek; published and unpublished archaeology monographs; Computing and technology records and correspondences; and GBL administrative records.

Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Dr. C.S. (Christopher Spalding) Peebles (1940-2012) was born in Clearwater, Florida and went on to receive his Bachelors Degree in Anthropology and Philosophy from the University of Chicago followed by graduate work at the University of Florida. He received his PhD from the University of California Santa Barbara in 1974. During his academics and career, Peebles was mentored by Lewis Binford, Albert Spaulding, and James Griffin.
Peebles organized the NSF-funded Moundville Archaeological Project and the federally sponsored Lubbub Creek Archaeological Project in Alabama. In 1983, Peebles joined Indiana University (IU) becoming Professor of Anthropology for 25 years and the Interim Director of the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology (GBL). During his time at IU, he was also Associate Vice President for Research and Academic Computing, and Dean for Information Technology. Dr. Peebles died on April 16, 2012 in Blomington, Indiana.

Included in the collection are Peebles's teaching materials, archaeological research, unpublished manuscripts, correspondence, and administrative records. The collection is primarily composed of paper records, and includes film-based media (photographs, slides, negatives), artwork (e.g. reproductions of Southeastern Native American gorgets), and computer storage disks (CDs, floppy disks, and zip disks).
