Background
- Biographical / Historical:
The Modern Political Papers Oral History Interviews evolved from conversations with Jerry Udell in conjunction with the first gift of his papers in 2004.
The interview with former governor Edgar Whitcomb arose from a conversation in which he noted that there seemed to be more interest in his experiences as a prisoner during World War II or sailing around the world after his governorship than in his gubernatorial years.
Extensive consultation with Nancy (Mrs. Lee) Hamilton regarding photographs for an exhibit on Hamilton's legislative career in 2006 and the stories she shared led to the interview with her.
In conjunction with preparation of a major exhibit in 2007 on Birch Bayh's legislative career, Senator Bayh suggested consultations with Gordon Alexander, Tom Connaughton, and John Rector, who agreed to be interviewed, as did Bayh's former staff member Eve Lubalin.
- Scope and Content:
These oral history interviews were conducted in conjunction with the preparation of political papers collections for researchers. In the case of staff of members of Congress, they focus on the individual's own career and work in the congressional office.
The interview with Nancy (Mrs. Lee) Hamilton strives to paint a picture of how family life may be maintained without being overwhelmed by the demands on a congressional spouse.
The interview with Edgar Whitcomb was undertaken specifically to cover his years as Indiana's governor.
