Background

Biographical / Historical:

Enoch Arnold Bennett, born in 1867 near Hanley, North Staffordshire, was an English novelist, critic and playwright known for his works about the middle class in Staffordshire. After serving as the assistant editor for Woman, he became the Director of Propaganda for the French Ministry of Information during World War I in 1903.

Scope and Content:

The bulk of the collection consists of working drafts of various writings in Bennett's hand as well as approximately 115 autograph letters, typed letters or postcards sent by Bennett to a variety of correspondents. Also included are letters written to Bennett by contemporaries, a pen-and-ink drawing by Harry Furniss of Bennett and his work, and several other miscellaneous related items.
