Background

Scope and Content:

"Soul and Funk: The Naptown Sound" was a collaborative initiative between the Indiana Historical Society and the Archives of African American Music and Culture that included a physical gallery exhibition and an oral history project. Planning for the project began in earnest in 2004, with the oral history interviews taking place between August 2004 and July 2005. The exhibition opened to the public on March 11, 2005 and remained open through the end of 2005.

This first series in this collection includes media production files and access files created during the oral history interviews. This includes both digital audio and digital video files. Physical access copies were made on DVD-R and CD-R discs soon after the completion of the project. Access copies have recently been made available through online streaming as well.

The second series includes materials assembled and/or used for the physical gallery exhibition. Pre-exhibit sketches of exhibit layouts and cases, as well as approximately 50 digital images of the completed exhibit, are included. Media used during or related to the exhibition, such as performances and funk music compilations, are present on CD-R discs. Access copies of this media is also now available to be streamed online. Also contained in this series are promotional materials such as postcards, press releases, and brochures. Clippings from magazines and newspapaers respresent press garnered by the project.
