Background

Biographical / Historical:

Several student writing journals have existed at Indiana University East since the spring of 1973. The Student Writing Journal collection is likely incomplete, so all dates are estimates. Based on the journals housed in the Archives, it seems the student writing journals changed names approximately every decade. The first journal was titled Potpourri which continued through the 1970s until it was replaced by Paideia by 1980. Thorn soon replaced Paideia, perhaps around 1991. Thorn continued until replaced by the IU East's Journal of Student Writing. The first Journal of Student Writing owned by the Archives is from 2002. This title only lasted through 2005, and the current title of the student writing journal, Tributaries, was first published in 2006. New issues are added to the collection as they are printed and distributed.

Scope and Content:

The Student Writing Journals collection contains writing journals published by Indiana University East students with the assistance of IU East faculty advisors. Later journals are marked as having been sponsored by the Indiana University East Writers' Club. Submissions to the journal vary from year-to-year and include short stories, poems, essays, and creative non-fiction. Submissions primarily come from Indiana University East students, but at times were also accepted from IU East faculty, staff, and other affiliates. All journals are housed in chronological order.
