Background

Biographical / Historical:

Bala Baptiste is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. A scholar of journalism and mass communication, his research focuses on the intersection between African Americans, mass media and history. He received a bachelor's degree in print journalism at Southern University at New Orleans, earned a master's degree in journalism at the University of Mississippi, and a doctor of philosophy in mass communications at Indiana University in 2003. He is currently associate professor and division chair of the communications department at Miles College in Fairfield, Alabama.

Materials in this collection were utilized in Baptiste's book, Race and Radio: Pioneering Black Broadcasters in New Orleans (University Press of Mississippi, 2019), that traces the history of the integration of radio broadcasting and the rise of Black broadcasters in New Orleans between 1945 and 1965, as well as the overall Black experience in radio during this period.

Scope and Content:

The collection is arranged into two series. The first series contains newspaper clippings related to Black Radio, the majority found in Louisiana Weekly. This series also contains information about Tex Stephens, including an interview transcript. The second series consists of audio cassette tapes of interviews conducted by Baptiste and recordings of university lectures and panels.
