Background

Scope and Content:

Begun in 1985, DMC is the world's longest-running, most prestigious DJ battle. DMC World and DMC National Champion titles continue to be one the most sought after for turntablists worldwide. Videos of these early competitions feature classic solo showcase style battles, with DJs spinning vinyl on portable turntables as they perform short, choreographed routines in a demonstration of skills. As the competitions evolved, DJs became increasingly inventive, using sophisticated techniques focused on scratching, looping, and mixing to create entirely new beats and sounds from vinyl records. The competitions changed substantially in 2011 with the advent of vinyl emulation software.
