Background

Biographical / Historical:

Lowell McKee Green, MD was born on April 15, 1882 in Rushville, Indiana to attorney and Indiana State Representative Thomas M. Green and Anna D. (Foxworthy) Green. He graduated from Rushville High School in 1899 and attended Indiana University for two years, taking pre-medical courses. Green then completed a four-year course at Indiana Medical College, graduating in 1906 with a Doctor of Medicine degree. Green married Maud B. Fargo on September 15, 1910 and the two had two children: Thomas M. Green, Jr. and Lowell M. Green, Jr.

Green practiced medicine in Indianapolis and Rushville until volunteering to serve in World War I on July 19, 1917. He was commissioned as a first lieutenant in the Fourth Infantry regiment of the Indiana National Guard, where he established a medical unit of 33 soldiers (31 from Rush County). On August 5, 1917, Green's unit was mustered into service as the Infirmary of the 139th Field Artillery Unit. The unit trained at Camp Wolfe (Rushville, Indiana), Fort Benjamin Harrison (Indianapolis, Indiana), and Camp Shelby (Hattiesburg, Mississippi) before being deployed to France. Green was discharged from the U.S. Army Medical Corps on January 20, 1919 as a captain and returned to Rushville to practice medicine. He was a member of the American Legion Rush Post No. 150, American Red Cross, Rush County Medical Society, Sixth District Medical Society, Union District Medical Society, Indiana State Medical Society, and the American Medical Association. Green died on January 3, 1949 and is buried East Hill Cemetery in Rushville.
