Background

Biographical / Historical:

Blanche M. Hunckler was born Blanche Marie Sturm on July 30, 1920, in New Castle, Indiana. She attended St. Paul's High School in Marion, Indiana, and graduated from there as valedictorian. In 1942, she graduated as a registered nurse from St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. She then worked as an anesthetist and surgical assistant in Marion, Indiana, and she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Health Arts in 1979 from the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois. In 1945, she married Staff Sergeant Paul J. Hunckler. After the end of World War II, Paul Hunckler enrolled in the University of Utah under the GI Bill and the couple lived in Ogden and Salt Lake City, before moving to Chicago and then eventually settling in Huntington, Indiana, in January 1950.

Blanche Hunckler was a member of the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, and she served as an officer in the Rosary Society and as a Eucharistic Adoration Coordinator, and she was a member of the Daughters of Isabella. She was a supporter of the Right to Life movement, and in the late 1970s and early 1980s she served for three years on the Pro-Life Policy and Planning Committee on the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocesan Board. In January 1974, she and two other local women formed the Huntington County Gift of Life, an organization that supported the Pro-Life Movement and provided supplies to pregnant women and families. The group eventually became affiliated with the Indiana Right to Life, Inc., and the National Right to Life Committee, Inc., and in November 1979 it became the Huntington County Right to Life, Inc.

It is not clear when Blanche Hunckler became involved in politics and particularly when she became interested in the political career of Indiana Republican Senator Richard G. Lugar, but she participated in the Phone Project for his 1982 Senate re-election campaign, and in a document from 1983 she and Paul are listed as the Huntington County Service Representatives for Senator Lugar. By the time work began on his 1988 Senate re-election campaign, they had become the Huntington County Coordinators for their district. They seemed to have stepped down from this role in 1989; in a letter dated January 5, 1989, to Senator Lugar's Indiana State Director, the Huncklers recommend a replacement for them as Huntington County Coordinators. In this letter, they outline the work they did up to that point for Senator Lugar and his campaigns: being co-chairs for the Phone Project in 1982 and 1988; obtaining signatures for the Petition Drive in 1987 as Lugar County Service Representatives; chairing the Postcard Project and Door Hangers Project in 1988; recommending Steve Pfister to serve as Finance Director for the Friends of Dick Lugar; and later regularly clipping and sending all press clippings related to Senator Lugar to his State Director.

Blanche Hunckler died on December 7, 2020, in Warren, Indiana.

Scope and Content:

The Blanche M. Hunckler Papers contain documents and other items collected by Blanche Hunckler that pertain to Indiana Senator Richard G. Lugar. In particular, the collection consists of materials related to work done by Blanche and her husband Paul Hunckler on Senator Lugar's 1982 and 1988 re-election campaigns, as well as additional correspondence between the Huncklers, Senator Lugar, and members of his staff.

In 1982, Blanche Hunckler co-chaired the Phone Project for the Friends of Dick Lugar as part of Senator Lugar's re-election campaign. Included in the collection is a "Lugar '82 Home Phone Kit," which contains an instruction manual, survey response cards, and a pencil to fill out the cards. However, the bulk of the materials are connected to Blanche Hunckler's work on Senator Lugar's 1988 re-election campaign. By that time, Blanche and Paul were serving as the Huntington County Coordinators for Senator Lugar's re-election and were consequently in close contact with members of his staff as well as members of the Friends of Dick Lugar, the fundraising organization affiliated with his re-election campaigns. Included are items that document the different campaign projects they chaired for their district, including the 1987 Petition Drive, the Phone Project, the Postcard Project, and the Door Hangers Project. Even after Senator Lugar's re-election in 1988, the Huncklers continued to participate in projects related to his work in the state, most notably by collecting newspaper clippings about the Senator and sending them to his Indiana State Director.

The Huncklers received mailings and correspondence from his office and from the Friends of Dick Lugar. Much of this correspondence is related to the 1988 campaign, but there are also items that are not campaign related. Letters and press releases were sent out to update the Senator's constituents generally, and often the Huncklers in particular, on Senator Lugar's recent legislative activities and accomplishments, as well as his stance on particular issues. Notable in this regard are several letters to the Huncklers from Senator Lugar discussing his position on President Ronald Reagan's nomination of Judge Robert Bork to the Supreme Court. In 1987, the Huncklers were also involved in the search for a new Finance Director for the Friends of Dick Lugar.
