Background
- Biographical / Historical:
James Brown, also known as the Godfather of Soul, was born on May 3rd, 1933. He was the leading musical figure in innovating the genres of Funk and Soul Music. Growing up in Georgia, his roots came from Gospel music, and led him through several influential musical groups, the most important being the "James Brown Band" (1960s) and "James Brown and the J.B.'s" (1970s-1980s). His most famous hits were "I Got You (I Feel Good)", "It's a Man's Man's Man's World", and "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine". In total James Brown had 17 Number 1 Hits on the Billboard R&B charts, and in 2013 he was inducted posthumously into the first class of the Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame.
- Scope and Content:
The collection consists primarily of materials collected by John McDowell and Patricia Glushko, who were in Augusta, Georgia at the time of James Brown's death on December 25, 2006. Their documentation includes local newspaper and television coverage, including the memorial service broadcast live on WRDW TV from the James Brown Arena. Additional materials were added by Portia K. Maultsby including a program and poetic meditation.
