Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Helaine Victoria Press (HVP) was founded in Los Angeles in 1973 by Jocelyn Helaine Cohen and Nancy Victoria Poore. In 1976, they moved HVP to Martinsville, Indiana where they researched, printed, and distributed postcards on the history of women. Postcards were collected, images were located at repositories, and some were then republished with additional information under the HVP imprint. Postcards were sold individually or in sets, including: Latin American Women and U.S. Latinas, Women in Ecology, Sisters of the Harlem Renaissance, Women in Social Protest: The US Since 1915, and Women in the American Labor Movement. In the late 1980s Cohen moved to San Francisco where she received an M.F.A. from the Academy of Art College in 1991. In 1995 HVPs work, and their printing press were transitioned to the Women's Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, New York as a part of their Suffrage Print Shop. In 2009, the printing press was transitioned to Cracker Factory in Geneva, NY to be incorporated into the work of the nonprofit- Three Stories.
