Background
- Biographical / Historical:
The Extensions of the Tradition recital series was inaugerated in 1988 at the University of Michigan with the purpose of presenting works by African-American composers to the general public. The series was brought to Indiana University in 1993 and continues as a partnership between the African American Arts Institute (event organizer), Archives of African American Music and Culture, and Jacobs School of Music. There is currently no record on file of the first IU concert in 1994. The concert in 1995 included thee opening of the Undine Smith Moore Collection with a recital and exhibit. The Undine Smith Moore Collection has since been renamed Black Composer Archives, which encompasses a number of composer specific collections.
- Scope and Content:
The collection materials are contained in one series that span the over two decades of Extensions of the Tradition events. Not every year's concert is represented with materials in the collection - the gaps being 2002-2004, 2008-2010, and 2012-2013. Programs are present for most of the represented concerts. Many of these programs are supplemented with program notes and administrative materials. An exhibit was also commonly displayed at the time of the Extensions concerts, with the exhibit content reflecting that year's artists and compositions focus. Several of these exhibitions are documented in this collection through photogrpahs and exhibit notes. Video and/or audio recordings are present for eight of the concerts. Additional media recordings for Extensions concerts are held at the Jacobs School of Music (see related materials note for more details). These materials are available for streaming online upon request.
- Acquisition information:
- In 1999, the master video files from previous concerts, along with some flyers and programs, were deposited at the AAAMC by AAAI Director, Dr. Charles Sykes. Materials for subsequent concerts were collected each year and added to the collection.
