Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Bayh's longest serving press secretaries were Steven Lesher from 1965-1968 and Bill Wise from 1970-1977, both of whom were engaged in a broad range of activities within the office and had their own special topical interests, as evidenced in the topical files. Their monitoring of legislation resulted in some cases in documents relating to legislation being part of Press Department files, which thus complement the related legislative working files.
- Scope and Content:
The collection contains copies of Bayh's newsletters and the working files that created them, a nearly complete set of his columns submitted to newspapers, and a nearly complete set of the over 3600 press releases that described Bayh's work to the public, many of them including statements and speeches either in their entirety or in excerpt. Also included are files of clippings from clipping services as well as staff and supporters covering local and national politics as well as local and national policy issues.

This part of the Birch Bayh Senatorial papers is partially processed, with lists of the columns and press releases available online. Processing of the clippings and operating files is in progress.

The processed portion of the collection is arranged in five series: Columns, Mailings, Newsletters, and Press Releases with individual columns and press releases listed by title or topic, and a fifth small series of files of Press Releases by Subject.
