Background

Biographical / Historical:

Everette Elzie Singleton was born in 1882 in Marshall Co. Indiana to William Henry Singleton and Arrilla Elizabeth Ellis. He was the oldest of four. In 1906 he married Dora Walker and was listed as a motorman for the Fort Wayne Street Railway. Following this career in the 1910 US Census Mr. Singleton was listed as a clerk for a railroad yard in South Bend Indiana. Later, in his 1918 WW II registration, Mr. Singleton had a career and location change and became a fitter for Gary Heat, Light, and Water Company. Shortly after being listed on the 1920 US Census Mr. Singleton had another career change. Listed upon this Census Mr. Singleton had become a Calumet Lake County Fireman. After a decade or so of this profession Mr. Singleton went back to his previous career as a pipe fitter for a Gary gas works company. Later Mr. Singleton worked his way up to a stakeman for a utility company. NIPSCO is the likely utility company since it is listed as his employer on Mr. Singleton's WW II old man draft card. Later in life Mr. Singleton became a member of the Advisory Board of the Hobart Township. Throughout Mr. Singleton's life he had three children with Mrs. Dora Singleton. They were my son Clarence, son Lawrence, and daughter Mabel. Tragedy did strike the Singleton household in 1936 when William Singleton, Everette's father, was struck by a speeding car in Plymouth and died of his injuries. William was 80. Another large conflict within the Singleton household was with Clarence who was jailed in 1938 in Crown Point. It wasn't until 1941 that Clarence was paroled. Everette Singleton finally passed on New Years Day 1959 due to pneumonia.
