Background
- Biographical / Historical:
St. Margaret Hospital opened its doors in 1898. Located in Hammond Indiana. The hospital was Lake County's first hospital. This hospital also was originally run by nuns instead of nurses. The nuns had to go into Chicago to purchase supplies until Northwest Indiana grew in industry. Early days of the hospital lead to using horse drawn wagons instead of ambulances. The hospital grew in both 1901 and 1907 with two additional buildings being added. With additional buildings, services were then also added for patients. St. Margaret's was the first hospital in Northwest Indiana to hold a Cycle III Chest Pain Center Accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers. The nursing school at this location was open and teaching until it closed its doors in late 1960s. In 1991 St. Margaret's merged with Our Lady of mercy Hospital and became known as St. Margarets Mercy North Campus Hospital. St. Margaret changed names in 2011 and has become Franciscan Health Hammond. It closed in 2022.
