Background

Biographical / Historical:

Dr. John W. McKinstry was a pastor of First Christian Church (Iowa City, IA) from 1993-2016. In 2009, McKinstry received funding from the Lilly Foundation for a sabbatical to research lutherie. This sabbatical led him to investigate and collect materials surrounding 19th century Banjo manufacturing and performance. His donation to the AAAMC was in part to expand the historicization of the banjo as a part of the African American Music continuum with a focus on banjo repertoire in the 19th century as well as the banjo performance in the minstrelsy era.
