Background

Biographical / Historical:

William M. Dugan, Jr. is a medical oncologist who practices primarily in rural clinical settings. He graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana in 1960 and received his M.D. from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1963. Trained as a hematologist, Dr. Dugan started practicing medicine in 1969 and earned his medical oncology board certification in 1973, after which he was appointed Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Most of his teaching activities were with medical students doing clinical rotations at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. In 1983, Dr. Dugan was among the founding members of the Community Cancer Care outreach program, which focused on providing cancer care in rural settings to keep patients from having to travel for treatment. In 2005, he received the Rural Health Association's Rural Health Practitioner of the Year Award, which recognizes rural health leaders whose dedication and commitment exemplifies the highest standards of rural health care and service.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of 63 photographic slides used by William M. Dugan, Jr., MD to teach hematology to second year medical students at the Indiana University School of Medicine in the 1970s. The original boxes containing the slides were labeled "Sophomore Course - Hematology Section - Slides (Set R, Box 1-2)."
