Scope and Content:

The U.S. Steel Corporation Collection documents the formation, growth, and operations of one of the largest and most influential steel companies in the world, from its inception in 1901 through the late 20th century. The collection primarily consists of a variety of materials on the corporation's establishment and development in the Calumet Region, particularly the Gary Works facility in Gary, Indiana. These materials have been donated by various individuals and corporations over the course of the company's history.

The materials consist of a wide variety of formats, including brochures, pamphlets, booklets, journals, newsletters, ledgers, correspondence, contracts, specifications, programs, and reports. These items span from the early 20th century to the late 1990s, reflecting the corporation's activities, with a particular emphasis on the Gary Works facility. The Gary Works materials include items such as newsletters, employee directories, management bulletins, and technical reports, which offer insight into both daily operations and significant milestones in the plant's history.
