Background

Biographical / Historical:

Lorenzo Alvary was born February 20, 1909, in Debrecen, Hungary. He studied law before studying music in Milan in Berlin. His operatic debut was in 1934 at the Royal Opera in Budapest. He also appeared with the Vienna State Opera in 1937. Alvary emigrated to the U.S. and became an American citizen in 1944. He was a regular performer at the San Francisco Opera from 1939-1977, and also at the Metropolitan Opera from 1942-1972 and until his retirement at the age of 69 in 1978. He passed away in New York City on December 13, 1996.
