Background
- Biographical / Historical:
The Indiana Chapter of the Association for Fundraising Professionals (formerly the Indiana Chapter of the National Society for Fund Raising Executives, or ICNSFRE) began in Indianapolis in 1978 when, with encouragement from the Lilly Endowment, a small group of Indiana professional fundraisers met to share experiences and sponsor continuing education programs. They invited a more comprehensive group of fundraising officers to join them and formed the Central Indiana Council of Fund Raising Executives (CICFRE). Polly Jontz was elected its first president in 1979.
The organization represented the needs of professional fundraisers in Central Indiana. CICFRE developed ethical standards, monitored changes in legislation relating to philanthropy, provided a network for its members, and offered professional development opportunities.
In 1979, NSFRE (now AFP) contacted CICFRE to join the national organization. Local membership saw no benefit of becoming a chapter of the NSFRE, so they voted against NSFRE's request. Again in 1981 NSFRE put forth a petition. Under the leadership of presidents Lynn Kandel, Dan Nicoson, Marilyn Burger, and other officers, the general membership voted to become a chapter of NSFRE in 1982. The organization became the Indiaan Council of Fund Raising Exectuives (ICFRE), the Indiana Chapter of NSFRE.
The chapter continues to be active, with a strong internet presence and continuing professional development opportunities.
