Background
- Biographical / Historical:
The Church on the Rock/Use What You've Got Ministry began in Indianapolis in 1989, organized by Reverand James and Cecelia Whitfield. The main focus of the ministry at its inception was to provide transportation for family members and friends to visit loved ones serving time in Indiana prisons.
The Society of Retired Executives assigned Alice Ross to help the Whitfields with their project, and she, in turn, asked her attorney duaghter, Roberta, for assistance in obtaining a bus and acquiring nonprofit status for the ministry.
A 1974 school bus provided transportation to prisons near Indianapolis on two weekday afternoons and travels to prisons farther away on weekends. A suggested donation of $10 for trips of an hour or less and $25 for longer trips helped to defray the expense of the bus and insurance.
Use What You've Got Prison Ministry separated from Church on the Rock with a separate 501(c)3 status in 2003. Both organizations continue to serve encarcerated people, their families, and formerly encarcerated people.
