Background

Biographical / Historical:

Barbara Gomez directed the service-learning initiatives for the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) from 1987 to 1997. She led CCSSO's advocacy efforts for the National and Community Service Trust Act of 1993 and assisted in drafting national legislation to include service-learning in the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Act. She was a co-founder and coordinator of the Alliance for Service-Learning in Education Reform, a working group of state education agency administrators, school and community-based service-learning practitioners, and education and youth development leaders. The Alliance developed the first set of standards for quality K-12 service-learning practice. As an independent consultant, 1997-2010, she continued work to integrate service-learning in K-12 education and experiential education. She has published reports and articles on service-learning, education reform, school-to-career, and funding and sustainability issues. Biographical note provided by Barbara Gomez.
