Background
- Biographical / Historical:
The IUPUI Department of Speech and Theatre was created in 1969 and later became a unit in the School of Liberal Arts. The name of the department later changed to Communications and Theatre, and still later to its present name of Department of Communication Studies in 1997. The Department of Speech and Theatre added telecommunications, programs in applied communication media, in 1977. In 1983, the department began offering a Masters of Arts in Applied Communications. The University Theatre program was a significant part of the department until fiscal constraints prompted its elimination in 1990-1991.
- Scope and Content:
The Department of Communication Studies Records house the administrative records, faculty records and correspondence of the IUPUI Communication Studies department. This collection, which dates from 1970 to 2015, consists of correspondence, reports, minutes, release forms, and video recordings of the speech night competition.. This collection covers the inner workings and early development of the department in the School of Liberal Arts and the speech night program.
