Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Department of Religious Studies Records at IUPUI is a unit of the School of Liberal Arts and among the arliest programs in the academic study of religion to develop at urvan and metropolitan universities. The founding of the departmebt began soon after the creation of IUPUI in 1969. A working group of professors from Indiana University Bloomington recieved a grant from the Lilly Endowment, which led to the hiring of key program leadership. The new program offically became the Department of Religious Studies by vote of the Indiana University Trustees on December 5, 1975. The first faculty consisted of three members: Proffesor James Smurl, Professor Rowland Sherrill, and Professor Jan Shipps. The first graduate of the program was in 1976. The Department of Religious Studies Deparment maintains and active foucs on urban engagement with traditional scholarship and close relationships with community partners.

Scope and Content:

The Department of Religious Studies Records houses the administrative records, faculty records, and correspondence of the IUPUI Religious Studies Department. This collection, which dates from 1966 to 1996, consists of correspondence, reports, publications, conference papers, and other research materials. This collection covers the inner workings and early development of the department in the School of Liberal Arts.
