- Biographical / Historical:
The Sociology Department is a unit of the School of Liberal Arts, created in the merger of the Indiana University-Indianapolis Downtown Campus and the Purdue University-Indianapolis Extension to form IUPUI. The department first offered a sociology major in 1973. The department began offering their first master's degree in 2000 and their first Ph.D. minor in 2004.

The Department of Sociology Records houses the administrative records, faculty records, and correspondence of the IUPUI Sociology Department. This collection, which dates from 1973 to 1998, consists of correspondence, reports, publications, conference papers, and other materials. This collection covers the inner workings and early development of the department in the School of Liberal Arts.

The collection is organized into three series: Series 1. Administrative Records, Series 2. Faculty Records, and Series 3. Correspondence.The records of the series are filed aphabetically, and then chronologically. Series 2 is arraigned beginning with syllabi arraigned chronologically, then faculty members arraigned alphabetically.
