Background
- Biographical / Historical:
The Geology department was created as a unit of the IUPUI School of Science following the merger between Indiana University and Purdue University in 1969. The department began offering a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degree in 1969. The first geology degree was awarded in the spring semester of 1971. In 1977,the department began offering a Bachelor of Arts in Geology program with a concentration in Earth Science Teaching. THe following year, the department offered its first graduate degree with a Master of Arts in Teaching Earth Science. The degree changed to a Master of Sciences in Geology in 1985.
- Scope and Content:
The Department of Geology Records houses the administrative records, faculty records, and correspondence of the IUPUI Geology Department. This collection, which dates from 1963 to 1992, consists of correspondence, reports, department planning, enrollment reports, and other materials. This collection covers the inner workings and early development of the department in the School of Science.
