Collections

​The Ferguson mss., 1864-1929, consists of a collection of letters to Charles Eugene Ferguson, 1856-1945, a physician of Indianapolis, Indiana, and a member of the Indiana University School of Medicine faculty.

​The Esarey mss., 1912-1914, consists of the reports of a survey of Indiana newspapers and the draft of a history of newspapers in Indiana based on the survey.

The Esarey mss. II, 1830-1865, consists of a commission to Jonathan Davis Esarey, 1783-1858, as associate judge of Perry county, Indiana, 1830; deed for the transfer of real estate in Crawford county, Indiana, by John Hughes to Tolbort T. Yates, 1840; land grants to Jonathan Davis Esarey, 1837, 1841, to John Hughes, 1840, 1841, and Jesse Clark Esarey, 1817-1869, soldier, 1858; a commission to Jesse Clark Esarey as an ensign in the 12th regiment, Indiana Militia, 1841; report by Jesse Clark Esarey of the Perry county Oil Rifles, 1865; certificate issued to Jesse Clark Esarey for study and drill at the school of instruction at Burnside Barracks, 1862; a bill for rations furnished for picket duty at Cross Roads near Hitt's blacksmith shop, July 13-18, 1863, at the time of Morgan's Raid by G.W. Hitt; and a diploma to Louisa E. Hight from the Monroe County Female Academy, 1856.

The Engel mss., 1862-1941, consists of letters to Harry Engel, 1901-1970, artist and professor dealing primarily with the murals in the Indiana University Auditorium, 1933-1941.

The Elliott, J.B. mss., 1851-1853, are letters written by and to John Bennett Elliott, 1836-1904, student at Indiana University, 1852-1853, and later farmer and fruit grower of Harmony Township, Posey County, Indiana.

​The Eigenmann mss., 1851-1971, consists of the papers of Carl H. Eigenmann, 1863-1927, ichthyologist, and his wife, Rosa Smith Eigenmann, 1858-1947, ichthyologist.

The Pliny mss., 9th cent.-1938, are photostats of Pliny manuscripts assembled by Selatie Edgar Stout, 1871-1969, professor of Latin and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Indiana University.

The Moenkhaus mss., 1892-1918, consist primarily of the correspondence of zoologist William J. Moenkhaus, 1871-1947, former professor at Indiana University.

The Woodburn mss., 1795-1942, consist of letters and papers of four generations of the Woodburn family, James Woodburn, 1748-1812, farmer; Dorrance Beatty Woodburn, 1786- 1856, farmer and teacher; James Woodburn, 1817-1865, teacher; and James Albert Woodburn, 1856-1943, historian.

The Cleland mss., 1911-1946, consists of the papers of botanist Ralph Erskine Cleland, 1892-1971. They consist chiefly of correspondence with prominent scientists on Oenothera, evening primrose.

The Piercy mss., 1911-1942 (mainly 1925-1929), are letters from English and American authors to Josephine Ketcham Piercy, 1895- , teacher of English at the University of Illinois and Indiana University.

The Raintree Press mss., 1975-2010, consist of manuscripts, galleys, etc., of the Raintree Press of Bloomington, Indiana.

The Lilly Library Readers Services Dept. mss., ca. 1950- 1978, consist of the correspondence and office files of that Department and of Geneva Warner, 1919- , Special Collections librarian, later Head of Readers Services. Several of the files date from the Indiana University Library's Special Collections era, prior to the existence of the Lilly Library. In Spring 1978, the Readers Services Department was merged with Technical services to form a single Book Department. Geneva Warner retired July 1, 1978, at which time this material was sorted and transferred to the Public Services Department for retention as part of the Lilly Library Archives.

The Lilly Library Mendel Collection mss., 1961-1974, consist of reference correspondence relating to the acquisition, cataloging, and use of the Mendel Collection of Latin American materials in the Lilly Library. Additions to the collection include financial records and papers relating to the firm Lathrop C. Harper while owned and operated by the Indiana University Foundation, primarily 1967-1968. Also present are some earlier, 1950s, materials that include stock issues and minutes of stock holders meetings.

The Library Club of Bloomington, Bloomington Indiana mss., 1923-1947, consist of correspondence, minutes, financial reports, and membership lists.

The Wells, H.B mss., 1980-2000, consists of the writings of Herman B Wells, 1902-2000, president of Indiana University.

The Minnesota Review mss., 1973-1981, consist of the correspondence, printers manuscripts, and proofs of the New Series of the literary magazine published first in Madison, Wisconsin, and later in Bloomington, Indiana.

The Miller, T.A. mss., 1934-1977, consists of the papers of Taulman Allaire Miller, 1910-1977, professor of economics at Indiana University.

The Winther, O.O. mss., 1963-1967, consist of the letters and book reviews of Oscar Osburn Winther, 1903-1970, historian, of Indiana University.

The Moody mss., 1934-1990, consist of correspondence files and manuscripts of Indiana University professor of theatre and drama, Richard Moody, 1911-1996.
