The Porter mss., 1799-1850, are the papers of Sir Robert Ker Porter, 1777-1842, artist and diplomat, and his sister Jane Porter, 1776-1850, novelist.

Consists of letters and papers of Charles Warren Fairbanks, 1852-1918, U.S. senator from Indiana and vice president (1905-1909), and his son, Warren Charles Fairbanks, 1878-1938, newspaper publisher. The Charles Warren Fairbanks material, which comprises the bulk of the collection, consists of correspondence with prominent political figures, businessmen, bankers, friends, relatives and constituents; manuscript and printed speeches of Fairbanks; law office papers; bills and receipts; miscellaneous papers; newspaper clippings; invitations; calling cards; pictures; slides of Fairbanks's trip around the world, 1909-1910; and miscellaneous printed matter. The Warren Charles Fairbanks papers, 1918-1938, relate to the settlement of the estate of his father, Charles Warren Fairbanks; the Indianapolis News; the Fairbanks Blue ridge farms in Piatt County, Illinois; and the Fairbanks Valley farms in Greene County, Illinois.

The Clay mss., 1812-1849, consists of a collection of political letters of congressman, U.S. senator, and secretary of state Henry Clay , 1777-1852.

The Butler mss., 1835-1937, includes papers, 1877-1937, of Amos William Butler, 1860-1937, zoologist, anthropologist, and sociologist, and a few papers, 1835-1871, of his father, William Wallace Butler, 1810-1903, merchant and farmer.

The Latin American mss. Mexico III, 1563-1855, consist of historical documents relating mainly to Mexico's colonial period.

The Latin American mss. Mexico, 1502-1925, is an extensive collection covering much of Mexican history in depth.

The Latin American mss. Bolivia, 1606-1927, are illustrative chiefly of the colonial life of Alto Peru and of Bolivia's long struggle for independence from Spain.

The Latin American mss.--Miscellaneous 1536-1957 consists of miscellaneous documents from various Latin American countries, compiled from the other Latin American mss., including correspondence, goverment documents, literature, photographs, and other documents.

The Latin American mss. Argentina, 1612-1944, consist of material principally about the independence period of Argentina for the years 1806-1823.

The Latin American mss. Mexico III, 1563-1855, consist of historical documents relating mainly to Mexico's colonial period.

The Latin American mss. Nicaragua, 1603-1857, consist primarily of items concerning Nicaragua's independence from Spain and its short-lived federation with Mexico.

The War of 1812 mss., 1776-1879, consists of individual items acquired separately either as a gift or purchase from a variety of sources, relating to the War of 1812.

The Latin American mss. Peru, 1535-1929, consist of over 6500 documents which trace the historical, economic and social development of what is presently known as Peru, with lesser coverage of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Ecuador.

The U.S. History mss., 1612-1977, consist of individual items acquired separately either as a gift, purchase, transfer, or removal from a variety of sources, relating to the United States. Additions continue to be made.

The Latin American mss. --Colombia, 1558-1890, consists of individual items acquired separately either as a gift, purchase, transfer, or removal from a variety of sources, relating to Colombia. Additions continue to be made.

The Latin American mss. --Ecuador, 1546-1866, consists of individual items acquired separately either as a gift, purchase, transfer, or removal from a variety of sources, relating to Ecuador. Additions continue to be made.

The Atocha mss., 1843-1855, consists of letters sent to businessman Alexander J. Atocha, 1804-1870, during the Mexican-American War.
